Arboricultural Reports & Surveys for Planning

If you are developing whether it be a small extension or outbuilding to a large development comprising multiple building and trees exist regardless of whether they are within your property or not and regardless of whether they are protected or not within falling distance of the prosed development, the architect must organizes a tree survey, often referred to as a BS 5837 survey to since the LPA has a statutory duty to safeguard trees in development. Without the survey/report, an application may not be validated which will cause delays to the application. It also serves to inform the agent by identifying retention-worthy trees and so they can be accommodated. If necessary ask your agent if the tree reports has been organized this because failure to produce the survey and survey report can delay an application significantly.

The BS 5837 tree informs the planners of the prevailing tree population and determines whether they require an arboricultural impact assessment to assess the potential impacts on trees. This is often required with the planning application along with the tree survey report. Where an impact assessments identified impacts on retained trees, a tree protection strategy is likely to be requested either as part of the determination process or as a pre-commencement condition. Please refer to the pages below for more information.

Our advice would always be to provide the requisite information with the application to avoid long delays and frustration both to the applicant and the planners. With 45 years combined experience in trees and planning from both perspectives, we are happy to provide free and expert advice on what you should do.
